The opportunity
The Product Development and Engineering roles are core of Magic Leap’s revolutionary AR capabilities. These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering and technical operations, performing cutting-edge and complex scientific research and development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap’s AR products and services; designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications; and collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product and features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting and exceeding our customer’s needs and our business objectives.
As a Sr Metrology Engineering Technician within our Optical Engineering group, you will work with an experienced cross-functional team to test innovative leading edge optical components for AR devices. This position is responsible for running and maintaining existing precision manufacturing and process equipment while utilizing best practices to produce high-quality, R&D-level prototypes and assemblies. You will assist engineers with the execution of experiments and prototype production on metrology equipment, maintain process monitors, and document the results of experiments with technical reports. The team features a collaborative and hands-on environment that fosters engineering excellence, creativity, and innovation in the interdisciplinary areas of optical design and testing, device fabrication, display technologies, image processing, and color sciences.
This role is based in our Austin, TX office and will require you to be onsite regularly. This position will also involve working in a Class 100 cleanroom environment and will require you to be able to suit up and wear cleanroom attire for extended periods.
What you’ll do
- Perform production testing and characterization of optical components for augmented reality display systems
- Create recipes, run repeatability tests, and troubleshoot machine issues
- Analyze data using statistical methods and tools (ie, JMP), compile data into reports, and communicate data across the team
- Travel domestic as required (expected to be less than 5% of your time)
The experience you bring
- 2-5+ years of experience in optical metrology methods and instrumentation including camera and imaging systems
- Extensive knowledge of optical assembly, alignment and test methods and field assessment of optical systems in a laboratory environment is required
- A background in test automation and using custom optical test systems ideally with OptoFidelity, TriOptics, etc
- Experience in the establishment and documentation of test procedures and standard operating procedures
- Excellent creative/analytical & critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Experience in working with cross-functional teams
It’s exciting if you also have
- Experience with opto-mechanics and automation, including precision alignment and fast prototyping of complex optical systems is highly preferred
